Can a Giveaway Tool Verify Instagram Follows and Likes? What Is and Isn’t Possible
No. No giveaway tool can automatically verify Instagram follows or check whether someone liked your post, because Instagram’s API (run by Meta) doesn’t let outside apps see who follows or likes another account. What a tool can do is ask entrants to confirm the username they used, and then you check the winner by hand before you announce them.
That’s not the answer some people hope for, so it’s worth knowing before you set up your giveaway. Here’s exactly what can and can’t be checked, and how to run a fair Instagram giveaway anyway.
Why can’t Instagram follows and likes be verified?
Giveaway tools check actions by asking the platform. When an entrant signs in with their account, the tool calls the platform’s API and asks: did this person do the thing?
Instagram’s API doesn’t answer that question. It’s built to let people and businesses read and manage their own content. It has no way to check whether one user follows another account, or liked someone else’s post.
Facebook has the same limit, for the same reason. TikTok’s API doesn’t support checking follows, likes or video views either.
So this isn’t a missing feature in one tool. The information isn’t available to any of them. If a tool says it checks Instagram follows automatically, it’s fair to ask how.
What actually happens when someone “follows” to enter
In SweepWidget, Instagram entry actions work like this:
- The entrant clicks the action, for example Follow on Instagram.
- They’re sent to Instagram to follow you.
- They come back and enter the username they followed with.
- The entry is credited based on that username.
Likes, comments, reposts and tag-a-friend work the same way: the entrant confirms what they did and which account they used. Submit post asks for the link to their post, which you can open and check. View post and Visit profile credit the entry when the link is clicked, so they count a visit, not a follow.
Facebook and TikTok actions use the same username confirmation. YouTube and X actions aren’t checked automatically either.
Which platforms can be verified automatically?
Plenty of them. For Discord, Twitch, Reddit, Bluesky and Telegram, the entrant signs in with their account, SweepWidget asks the platform whether the action happened, and the entry only counts if it did. A Discord entry means they joined your server. A Twitch entry means they followed you.

So the real choice isn’t between “verified” and “unverified” tools. It’s about which actions you ask for.
Is username confirmation good enough?
For most giveaways, yes. Three reasons:
- Most people do the action. Following takes one tap, and it’s easier to follow than to lie.
- Checking deters cheating. When your rules say winners will be checked, fake claims stop being worth it.
- You only check the winner. Not 5,000 entries. One person, one minute.
It’s not perfect. Someone can type a username and never follow. That’s why the winner check matters.
How to check an Instagram winner
- Draw your winner at random after the giveaway ends.
- Open your Instagram followers list and search for their username. If your rules asked for a like, check the likes on your post.
- Check anything else your rules asked for, like a tag in the comments or a repost.
- If they didn’t do it, Disqualify them and draw again. Disqualified people can’t be drawn a second time.
Write in your rules that winners will be checked, and that missing actions mean disqualification. It’s fairer to everyone, and it means the check never comes as a surprise.
Want to see who claimed an action before the draw? On the Manage Entries page, click View all entry types, then Instagram Follow. You’ll see everyone who claimed it, so you can spot-check a few or disqualify entries that are clearly fake.
How to get stronger entries from an Instagram giveaway
You can still run a giveaway on Instagram with better signals behind it:
- Add one checked action. Pair Instagram actions with a Discord join or a Twitch follow. Those are confirmed when people enter.
- Require a minimum number of entries to win. When you draw, set a minimum, so only people who completed several actions can win.
- Verify emails. On the Enterprise plan, entrants confirm their email with a 4-digit code. That doesn’t prove an Instagram follow, but it does prove a real person with a real inbox.
- Turn on security settings. On Pro and up, block VPNs and repeat IP addresses so one person can’t claim the same follow under ten email addresses.
What about comment giveaways?
Comment picker tools work differently: they load the comments on your own post. They can show who commented and who they tagged. They still can’t tell you whether those people follow you.
SweepWidget doesn’t import Instagram comments. Its Tag A Friend action asks entrants to tag a friend in the comments of a post you choose, then confirm. Photo contests work the same way: entrants upload their photo directly, because importing from Instagram isn’t supported.
The honest summary
- Automatic checks for Instagram, Facebook and TikTok follows and likes: not possible, with any tool.
- Automatic checks on Discord, Twitch, Reddit, Bluesky and Telegram: yes, in SweepWidget.
- For Instagram: entrants confirm their username, you check the winner, and you redraw if needed.
Set up that way, an Instagram giveaway is easy to enter and fair to win.
